US project to improve web access for low-income Deaf and hearing impaired

Communication Services for the Deaf (CSD), a US not-for-profit organisation promoting access for Deaf and hearing impaired Americans, has been awarded US$14.9 million towards a project to improve access to Internet-based services for people who are Deaf and hearing impaired.

Project Endeavor’ will distribute equipment, provide broadband services and connect low-income Deaf and hearing impaired individuals to both broadband and technical assistance.

Blip.tv provides closed captions

The US-based Blip.tv, one of the leading platforms for original web series, launched a new media player this week which supports closed captions.

While only a limited number of Blip.tv series have captions at the moment, those that do include some of its most popular shows, such as the science fiction series Red vs. Blue. Captions are uploaded to Blip.tv by the program creators, and activated by viewers via the ‘CC’ button on the media player.

US Theatre Development Fund awarded grant to expand captioning services

The Broadway, US-based Theatre Development Fund has been awarded a grant to partner with 11 regional theatres in a national theatre captioning initiative.

In response to numerous requests from arts organisations outside New York, the not-for-profit Theatre Development Fund (TDF) developed the National Open Captioning Initiative. The initiative targets regional areas where captioned theatre is not in use, and provides organisations with the skills to provide the captioning service and raise awareness of the value of open captions.

UN releases report on international ICT accessibility

The Global Initiative for Inclusive Information and Communication Technologies (G3ICT), an arm of the United Nations, has released a report on international developments in ICT accessibility, finding a gap between countries’ commitment and real-world implementation.

The ‘Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2010 ICT Accessibility Progress Report’ has found that, while many countries have statements of commitment on the rights of people with disabilities to access ICT, much more work is needed to implement real access solutions.
