Event Cinemas announce new accessible locations

From Thursday, 8 December onwards Event Cinema locations at Castle Hill in Sydney and Chermside in Brisbane will join the growing list of cinemas nationally that will show captioned and audio described movies.

Joining these two new locations, Event’s Marion MEGAPLEX in Adelaide will update from one existing open captioned screen to three screens showing both closed captions and audio description.

Event’s announcement also includes a number of existing closed captioned and audio described locations increasing their current level of access. From 1 December onwards, the following locations will move from 1 to 2 accessible screens:

New organisation to make online video more accessible for blind and vision impaired people

The Video Description Research and Development Center (VDRCD) is a new organisation funded by the US Department of Education which will investigate and develop new technologies to make online video more accessible for students who are blind or have impaired vision.

Located at the Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute in San Francisco, the VDRCD will identify and prototype new technologies to improve access via audio description to educational material delivered via the Internet and mobile devices.

Sydney Festival provides captioned and audio described performances

Sydney siders will have the chance to see open captioned and audio described performances as part of the annual Sydney Festival, held from 7-29 January.

Performances with audio description include Beautiful Burnout at the Seymour Centre, West Side Story at Sydney Opera House and Buried City at the Belvoir St Theatre. One session of each will be audio described via headsets for people who are blind or vision impaired.

Beautiful burnout and ‘Tis pity she’s a whore will be available with open captions for selected performances.

Sydney’s iconic Belvoir St Theatre announces 2012 accessible performances

One of Australia’s most enduring theatre companies, Belvoir, has announced audio described and captioned performances for 2012.

In working to ensure all its visitors have the same experience, Belvoir St Theatre will produce a number of accessible performances for next year’s season and has a priority booking service in place for these tickets.
