From Thursday, 8 December onwards Event Cinema locations at Castle Hill in Sydney and Chermside in Brisbane will join the growing list of cinemas nationally that will show captioned and audio described movies.

Joining these two new locations, Event’s Marion MEGAPLEX in Adelaide will update from one existing open captioned screen to three screens showing both closed captions and audio description.

Event’s announcement also includes a number of existing closed captioned and audio described locations increasing their current level of access. From 1 December onwards, the following locations will move from 1 to 2 accessible screens:

  • George St, Sydney
  • Parramatta, NSW
  • Maroochydore, Qld
  • Robina, Qld
  • Casuarina, Darwin NT
  • Glendale, Newcastle NSW
  • Myer Centre, Brisbane
  • Innaloo, Perth

The move to closed captions and audio description is part of the Cinema Access Implementation Plan, which is a joint initiative between the Federal Government and four major cinema chains of Hoyts, Village, Event/Greater Union/Birch Carroll & Coyle and Reading cinemas. As part of the plan, all locations within these chains nationally will commence accessible cinema sessions by the end of 2014.
