Read Captions Across America Day

Today is Read Captions Across America day, an annual campaign to promote the use of captions particularly for children, as video-based media can be a great instrument in nurturing reading skills when captions are turned on.

Hosted by the National Education Association (NEA) in partnership with the Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP), the campaign aims to bring the use of captions to the forefront of the minds of teachers and parents around the country, encouraging them to turn captions on.

Media Access Australia welcomes user testing for new website

Within the next couple of weeks we will officially launch our new website, showcasing the latest web technologies and meeting best practice international guidelines for website accessibility.

To ensure the highest possible standards are reached before the launch, we would like to invite anyone who is interested to give the website a test run and provide us with feedback. Your contribution will help all our website visitors, including people who are blind, vision impaired, Deaf, hearing impaired and with mobility impairments, to access the site.

Government review of disability standards in education

Peter Garrett, Minister for School Education, has released a discussion paper which encourages people to contribute to the Review into Disability Standards for Education 2005.

The Review of Disability Standards for Education 2005 discussion paper provides an important opportunity for education providers, training colleges, teachers and parents to provide feedback about important issues that may require comment. The aim of the Review is to improve “the education and training experience for people with disability”.

US communications regulator proposes new access rules

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will hold an open meeting on 3 March to consider Notices of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRMs) on two proposals of the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act.

These are:

  • The proposal to require providers of advanced communications services and manufacturers of equipment used for those services to make products accessible for people with disabilities.
  • The proposal to reinstate the FCC’s rules for video description (called audio description in Australia).

The 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act, a comprehensive set of proposals to make electronic and online media accessible, was signed into law by President Obama on 8 October 2010.
