From Thursday, 1 December Hoyts Cinemas will add a further five locations to its list of complexes across Australia screening movies with closed captions and audio description.

The five locations will commence closed captioned screenings only, with audio description added at a later date. The locations are:

  • Garden City, Perth (captions on 2 screens)
  • Eastgardens, Sydney (captions on 2 screens)
  • Norwood, Adelaide (captions on 1 screen)
  • Chadstone, Melbourne (captions on 3 screens)
  • Melbourne Central (captions on 2 screens)

CaptiView units will be available at all locations with a minimum of five units per screen. Patrons can ask for a unit at the box office.

Due to equipment certification issues, Hoyts is unable to offer audio description until early next year. The delay in the certification and installation of audio description at the five new locations is also relevant to Hoyts’ Penrith and Erina complexes.

Hoyts will be installing the new Fidelio system which offers audio description via a receiver with connected ear buds. Patrons are able to bring their own ear buds or use a set provided by the cinema. The Fidelio system also allows patrons to bring a signal splitter and share an audio description soundtrack between two people. However, splitting can cause a small loss of sound quality.

The move to closed captions and audio description is part of the Cinema Access Implementation Plan. Feedback on the Plan is encouraged and can be sent to accessible.cinema@fahcsia.gov.au.
