Speech-to-text services increase classroom access

no

An article in Hearing Health Magazine has promoted the use of speech-to-text services in the classroom. Such technology allows for spoken words to be converted to text so that they appear on a screen, similar to the way in which captioning of live events appears on television.

This live captioning can take place in a classroom by a trained professional typing as they listen to the teacher speak, or by an operator repeating  what the teacher says into a microphone, with their speech converted to text via automatic speech recognition technology. The article recognises the value of printed text as a supplement to audio content, not only for students with hearing impairment, but for all students.

Pilot trials technological solutions for regional hearing impaired students

no

A new pilot, launched today at Cerdon College, Merrylands NSW, which aims to maximise learning of deaf and hearing impaired students in mainstream settings, is trialling a unique, cost-effective approach for remote and regional areas.

Regional education in Australia has been thrust into the spotlight with the recent election results and the announcement of a regional education fund, highlighting lack of resources in these areas. Media Access Australia’s research backs this up suggesting that support for hearing impaired students in these areas falls far behind support in the cities.

The UK's National Schools Film Week 2010

no

The annual National Schools Film Week (NSFW) in the UK kicks off again in October with more than 200 captioned and audio described sessions.

Produced by the charity Film Education, NSFW provides teachers and their students with the opportunity to see a wide range of films at local cinemas entirely free-of-charge.

The festival's goal is to support classroom teaching by providing schools with a powerful experience for their students that links directly to elements of the curriculum, supported by an online library of resources related to individual films and more generic topics.

New US National Education Technology Plan criticised by disability groups

no

The United States draft National Education Technology Plan 2010 has been criticised by disability groups for not going far enough to ensure that accessibility needs are met.

The plan's mission statement  is to address the inequity in educational achievement. Although the draft plan is to be commended for its vision and timeline, it fails to note ‘disability’ as a minority group in a commitment to ensure that students are ready to graduate from high school to go on to further study or careers “regardless of race, income, or neighborhood”.
