The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, today released draft Terms of Reference for the Convergence Review due to commence in 2011.

The Australian Government has recognised that Australia’s media and communications regulations are becoming outdated as the ways we access content converge together (mainly via the Internet).

Therefore, the Government intends to fundamentally review the policy and regulatory frameworks that apply to the converged media and communications in Australia.

According to the draft Terms of Reference, the Committee will:

  • develop advice for Government on the appropriate policy framework based on a review of Regulatory Objects and the current policy framework;
  • advise on how this framework could be realised; and
  • advise on the impact that these changes will have on industry, consumers and the community.

Formal submissions addressing the draft Terms of Reference can be made in writing using the online submissions form, or by email or post. The closing date for submissions is Friday, 28 January 2011.
