Mobile applications Dragon Dictation and Dragon Search are now available for free in Apple’s Australian iTunes store. These applications allow you to dictate to your iPhone or iPad, alleviating the need to use the onscreen keyboard.

The onscreen keyboard, particularly on the iPhone, can be cumbersome and time consuming for sighted and blind or vision impaired people alike. The Dragon Dictation and Dragon Search applications are built on Dragon NaturallySpeaking, Nuance’s highly sophisticated speech recognition software.

Dragon Dictation will convert your speech into text and Nuance claims that using Dragon Dictation is up to five times faster than typing on the keyboard.

Dragon Dictation then allows you to send your text directly via email or SMS, or you can copy it to the clipboard and then paste it into any application you choose. Visit the Nuance website for a video demonstration of Dragon Dictation.

Dragon Search gives you the ability to search online using your voice. Simply speak your search query and receive combined results from sources such as Google, Yahoo, or Bing (depending on your default settings), YouTube, Twitter Search, iTunes and Wikipedia.

Both apps support Australian accents and include Australian vocabulary.

You can download Dragon Dictation app and Dragon Search app from Apple’s Australian iTunes store now.

More information about accessibility features of the iPhone and iPad can be found in the Digital Technology section of the Media Access Australia website.
