The Association for the Blind of Western Australia and Curtin University of Technology have announced that their new DAISY reader application for the Apple iPhone, DaisyWorm is now available for $4.99.

DAISY is a talking book format that allows you to navigate through an audio book in different ways such as hierarchically (by chapter or heading) or using other forms of content such as images. The new DaisyWorm application supports DAISY 2.02 and DAISY 3 formats and will play non-protected full audio and full text/full audio DAISY books on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

Current features (as cited in the Apple apps Store) include:

  • Full navigation of the book structure (dependent on book mark-up)
  • Fast forward and rewind of audio content with user specified time intervals
  • Platform independent transfer of books via built-in FTP server
  • Bookmarking with automatic save and resume of playback position on a per book basis
  • Works fully with Apple’s screen reader software, Voiceover

Free future upgrades will include user bookmarks, playback speed control and support for DAISY text only books.

DAISY books supported by DaisyWorm can be purchased from the Association for the Blind of Western Australia, the Vision Australia library, and other talking book libraries including the CNIB library in Canada, RNIB’s Talking Books catalogue in the United Kingdom, Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind’s library in New Zealand and TPB in Sweden.

DaisyWorm is by far the cheapest of the DAISY book readers for the iPhone. By comparison, the iPhone applications InDaisy Reader and Voice of DAISY cost AU$27.99 and AU$31.99 respectively.

You can download DaisyWorm now from the Apple iTunes store for AU$4.99.
