New Google Chrome extension magnifies selected text

People who are vision impaired will now be able to use a new extension that magnifies any selected text in Google Chrome.

 

ChromeViz is a Google extension that allows users to select text on a webpage which is then shown in large font in a box (called a lens) on top of the webpage content; see example below.

 

Instead of the standard zoom feature that increases the size of all the text on a page, ChromeViz displays the selected text in a separate box, leaving the original webpage unaltered.

First mobile application for captioning telephone calls

The first mobile application for captioning telephone calls is now available to US residents from the iPhone App Store.

Hamilton CapTel is a company that provides a free, nationwide service available with captions in both English and Spanish to US citizens. The company recently launched the Hamilton Mobile CapTel captioning application, an iPhone application that uses Hamilton CapTel’s captioning service to provide captioned telephone calls in real-time. The application and the captioning service are both free.

Accessible Kindle becomes significantly more affordable

Amazon has significantly dropped the price of its Kindle e-book reader to US$189 (AU$218), improving the affordability of the accessible e-book reader.

Facing increased competition from other e-book products such as the Nook and the Kobo, along with more generalist devices like the iPad, Amazon has dropped the price of its entry-level Kindle by US$60 (AU$70). This not only makes it one of the most affordable e-book readers on the market, but easily the most accessible around this price point.

iOS 4 has arrived with new accessibility features

Apple has just released the much anticipated update to its iPhone operating system, iOS 4, which includes additional accessibility features as well as over 100 new features including multitasking, folders and iBooks for the iPhone.

The iPhone is the smartphone of choice for people who are blind or vision impaired according to Paul Schroeder, Vice President of Programs and Policy at the American Foundation for the Blind. The latest updates to the iPhone’s operating system add even more accessibility features to the already impressive suite of features that have made this smartphone so popular with this consumer group.
