New information has lent credence to the rumours that Apple and software developers Nuance are partnering to provide voice-to-text in the upcoming release of iOS 5 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Apple user blog 9to5mac received screenshots of IOS 5 beta from a reliable source that show a microphone icon situated to the right of the space key on the onscreen keyboard. Once the microphone key is pressed, the onscreen keyboard will be replaced with a large microphone icon. When you finish talking, the text will appear in the text field.

Nokia unveils plans to include voice-to-text feature

no

Nokia has recently announced plans to include a voice-to-text feature on its new Windows Phones, a feature that could have a positive impact on sighted and vision impaired people alike.

The feature will allow users to compose text messages verbally and send, read or ignore incoming text messages using verbal commands. While the President of Nokia USA, Chris Weber, has suggested this feature could have a positive impact on unsafe driving, it may also allow people who are blind or vision impaired to compose texts more quickly and easily. The exact launch date of the feature has not yet been set.

Outrage at decision in JetBlue accessibility case

no

In a decision that has sent disbelief  and anger through the disability community, a United States federal judge has ruled that California anti-discrimination laws do not apply to airline websites and kiosks in the case against JetBlue Airways.

The case was brought against JetBlue Airways in October 2010 for the inaccessibility of their website and airport check-in kiosks for people who are blind or vision impaired.

The judge dismissed the case on the grounds that federal regulations, not state laws, applied in the case.

The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities recognises access to information and communications technologies, including the Web, as a basic human right.  This ruling strips away the rights of people with disabilities to access JetBlue’s website and kiosks.

ANZ goMoney supports blind and vision impaired customers

no

ANZ banking customers can now access the ANZ goMoney app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch using VoiceOver, Apple’s inbuilt screen reader technology.

According to ANZ’s frequently asked questions, the app is accessible with VoiceOver, with the exception of the ‘learn more’ screen and the review payment input details when using the Pay Anyone and BPAY® features.

ANZ supplies a workaround method for customers trying to access their individual transactions on the transaction list page.
