The next round of the Federal Government’s repeal red tape campaign is due to take place next month and is likely to include captioning issues. We have contacted a number of interest groups including Federal politicians with our recommendations on how repealing red tape could benefit the operation of the captioning elements of the Broadcasting Services Act.

Ofcom reveals UK television’s spotless access record


The UK's media and communications regulator, Ofcom, has not reported a breach of access requirements on UK television in over 15 months.

British television, including digital terrestrial, subscription and digital multichannels are required to meet specific captioning, sign language and audio description levels as part of their broadcast licence conditions.

Ofcom publishes a bi-monthly Broadcast Bulletin detailing any incidents or breaches of broadcast licence conditions, including requirements for television access services.

Access to telecommunications review launched


The Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy has launched an inquiry into access to telecommunications services which include telephones, the National Relay Service (NRS), mobile devices and the Internet. 

The Terms of Reference to the ‘Review of access to telecommunications by people with disability, older Australians and people experiencing illness’ is now open for comment from individuals, consumers, and representatives until 19th August 2011.

The review aims to explore, in relation to people needing assistance to access telecommunication services:
