Consultation paper provides opportunity to comment on TV captioning regulations

The Federal Government today released a consultation paper which proposes a number of changes to the regulations governing free-to-air television. The consultation process provides an opportunity for consumers to comment on current captioning regulations, and the fact that multi-channels such as Gem, 7Two, Eleven, ABC2 and SBS2 remain exempt from the captioning requirements that apply to primary channels.

AMI launches audio described French-language channel

The Canadian accessibility company Accessible Media Inc. (AMI) has launched AMI-télé, the world's first French-language channel to present its entire schedule with open audio description.

According to AMI, the service, primarily intended for the blind or partially sighted, will provide general content in French via satellite and cable companies to their subscribers.

Government postpones changes to captioning regulations

After lobbying from consumer groups, the Government has referred to a Senate committee a bill which would change captioning requirements for broadcasters and subscription TV providers.

A bill was today introduced into the House of Representatives by the Minister for Communications, Malcolm Turnbull, which would remove the requirement that free-to-air broadcasters need to report annually on their compliance with captioning targets.
