The Westpac Group have released their Accessibility Action Plan 2011 to tie in with the International Day of People with a Disability.

The intention of Westpac Group is to acknowledge the needs of its employees, customers and community members and accommodate them. An audit conducted by the group in 2010 has informed the priorities and criteria identified in the 2011 Accessibility Action Plan.

Government to 'immediately' move to improve access to media

Stephen Conroy, Minister for Broadband, Communications, and the Digital Economy, today released the ‘Investigation into access to electronic media for the hearing and vision impaired: Media access review final report’, and promised that the Commonwealth Government will “move to immediately implement the Report’s recommendations”.

The Media Access Review began under the Howard Government, and encompassed issues surrounding captioning, audio description, cinema and DVD accessibility, and emergency notification. The ‘Media access review final report’ proposed many positive recommendations, including:

Telstra releases new Disability Action Plan

Telstra has today released its fifth Disability Action Plan 2010-2012, addressing accessibility issues and solutions for the services it provides.

Tying in with the International Day of People with a Disability, Telstra promotes accessibility through a set of objectives for three key stakeholders including:

  • For our customers - to provide affordable, innovative and accessible products and services which improve the quality of life for Telstra customers with a disability and their carers.

Government releases Media Access Review report

The long awaited report about the Federal Government’s Media Access Review has been released.

The key findings are:

1. An audio description trial is proposed for the ABC during the second half of 2011 (subject to funding) and will be a   closed trial with receiver mix

2. Captioning quotas will be brought solely under the Broadcasting Services Act, including those for subscription television

3. Free-to-air television will have 100% captioning between 6am and midnight by analog switch-off

4. Caption quality standards will finally be formally addressed

5. Equipment issues making set-top boxes accessible
