The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has released a new report, ‘Technology developments in the digital economy’, detailing developments in infrastructure, smart technology and the digital community.

The report is highly technical and looks at a broad scope of worldwide developments in digital technology, but does not deal with access issues. Features discussed include home network technologies, digital identity management, growth in the smartphone market, developments in social media, and the proliferation of wireless technology.

Of some interest to Media Access Australia was the discussion of ‘Intelligent housing systems’. An example is the Living Tomorrow complex in Brussels, where “mirrors in the bathroom display blood pressure, temperature and weight from sensors in a toothbrush and in the floor; a smart mirror can provide reminders and display the weather” (p 19).

You can read the report on the ACMA website.
