Education Services Australia (ESA) has developed Scootle, a purpose designed search tool which enables teachers to find digital resources aligned to the Australian Curriculum (AC). Scootle is available to all teachers via jurisdiction login or by individual registration. Many resources in Scootle link to Australian Curriculum Content Descriptions and can be searched directly from the Australian Curriculum website.

Media Access Australia partnered with ESA to caption hundreds of short video clips provided by ESA under agreements with some major Australian cultural organisations. This was achieved through Media Access Australia’s Captioning Grant, provided by the former Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA), now the Department of Social Services and administered by Media Access Australia. ESA has integrated the caption files with Scootle’s media player to make captioned titles searchable by the user.

Scootle enables teacher’s to create ‘Learning Pathways’ which provide opportunities to organise, annotate and share digital resources and create collaborative workspaces.

How to find captioned Scootle content

  1. From the home page, choose only the ‘video’ icon, as circled below.A screenshot of Scootle with the 'video' icon circled.
  2. Ensure that you tick ‘video’ only, from menu on left hand side of screen. Circled in the middle of the screen are the number of available resources. A screenshot of Scootle results page with the number of resources circled.
  3. Video’ only needs to be ticked. Type ‘captions’ or ‘closed captions’ into the search bar at top of screen. This search returned 651 closed captions resources. A screenshot of the Scootle results page showing only captioned resources.

Currently it is not possible to refine the search for captioned multimedia by subject.
