UK study looks at 3D audio description guidelines

A study released by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) in the UK has indicated that audio description users do not believe that visual effects in 3D cinema and TV should be audio described.

The study involved two focus groups consisting of 10 blind and partially sighted people who regularly watch audio described programs on TV or DVD. Clips from 3D movies were shown to the groups and the history and process of 3D explained.

US video highlights learning benefits of captions

Aberdeen Captioning has released a short video about the learning benefits of captioning on TV.

In a bid to encourage people to use captions at home this video explains that children's literacy can increase dramatically if captions are turned on.

American groups call for universal television captioning

US Deaf and hearing impaired and disability advocacy groups have filed a petition with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for television to be fully captioned.

US Super Bowl to be fully captioned for first time

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD), the National Football League (NFL) and the FOX Broadcasting Company yesterday announced that this year’s Super Bowl, to be broadcast on 6 February, will be fully captioned for the first time, including captioning of all national commercials and promotions.

While the Super Bowl, the NFL’s championship game, has been captioned for years, this will be the first time that captioning on commercials has reached 100%. According to a survey conducted by access advocate Sean Zdenek, 75% of commercials during last year’s Super Bowl were captioned. The Super Bowl is usually the most watched television event of the year in America, with a 30-second advertising spot during it costing US$2.7 in 2010.
