Today is Read Captions Across America day, an annual campaign to promote the use of captions particularly for children, as video-based media can be a great instrument in nurturing reading skills when captions are turned on.

Hosted by the National Education Association (NEA) in partnership with the Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP), the campaign aims to bring the use of captions to the forefront of the minds of teachers and parents around the country, encouraging them to turn captions on.

NEA runs an annual national event called Read Across America designed to celebrate Dr Seuss’s birthday by inspiring all children to pick up a book and start reading. Read Captions Across America (RCAA) coincides with this event and illustrates how important captioned media can be to students learning to read, whether they are deaf or hearing impaired or not.

The DCMP, funded by the US Department of Education, maintains a database of captioned education material. With the help of the National Association of the Deaf, the DCMP offers information on captioning as well as free media, lesson plans and ideas for involving local communities in RCAA events.

Media Access Australia has a targeted Education Strategy which highlights the importance of captioned media in schools. The Accessible Education Database provides an online catalogue of captioned titles that can be sourced from the National Library of Australia, and supports The Classroom Access Project which puts ‘captions in action’ in mainstream classroom settings.
