AppleVis has announced the winners of its first ever Golden Apple awards, celebrating innovations that enable and empower blind and vision impaired Apple users. The winners were determined by popular vote amongst AppleVis readers.

The Golden Apple went to Fleksy, an app which uses advanced predictive text software to allow accurate typing even without looking at the screen. The app also took out the award for Best iOS App of 2012 and earned its developers, Syntellia, Developer of the Year.

The award for the best app for Mac computers went to YoruFukurou (NightOwl), a fully accessible client for Twitter. The app includes a multitude of keyboard shortcuts and advanced features designed for Twitter addicts.

Unsurprisingly, the iPhone 5 was voted Best Apple Product of 2012, while the Otterbox Defender Case won Best 3rd Party Hardware or Accessory.

AppleVis intends to hold the awards each year to encourage device and software makers to consider the diverse needs of the blind and vision impaired in their work. Nominations for the 2013 awards will be announced towards the end of the year.
