Audio description for theatre, delivered live by trained audio describers, provides patrons with verbal descriptions of transitions, movements, gestures, props, settings, costumes and scenery in a vivid and succinct manner during pauses in dialogue. To complement this in-theatre free service, Vision Australia will now email pre-show notes to increase access and enrich patrons’ experiences.
The system has been trialled over the last few months and the note style has been refined to best deliver the required information.
The first official pre-show notes have been delivered to audio description patrons attending next week’s Melbourne Theatre Company performance of Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard. Vision Australia expects to expand its pre-show notes across all musicals, operas, plays and ballets it audio describes each year.
