Google is running a workshop for older people and those with disabilities on how to get the most out of the internet.

As part of the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network (ACCAN) and Telstra’s M-Enabling conference on 14-15 August, the workshop will introduce people to how computers, smartphones and tablets can be made easier to use with assistive technology. The workshop will also give tips on internet security and how to use Google applications such as Gmail, maps and Hangouts.

The wider M-Enabling conference will focus on how mobile devices can enhance the lives of people with disability and older people. The sessions will cover how smartphones and tablets can be made more accessible, and what the communications industry needs to do in order to serve the ageing population.

The conference brings together Australian and international experts, including Karen Peltz Strauss, Deputy Chief, Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau, US Federal Communications Commission. Media Access Australia’s project manager Dr Scott Hollier will chair a panel on website accessibility with panellists from the Australian Government, Optus, Infoxchange, the Australian Communications Exchange and the University of New South Wales.
