Media Access Australia WA Manager Dr Scott Hollier will be presenting today on access to online media and digital technology at the Council on the Ageing WA Active Ageing Conference.

Dr Hollier’s presentation, ‘Getting online – accessibility tools for seniors with disabilities’, will look at the accessibility features of computers and mobile devices, including Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Google Android devices and future trends.

Access to media empowers people of all ages to be independent, gain knowledge, make their own choices and be active members of our society.

Australia’s ageing population is projected to result in large increases in the number of people with a vision or hearing impairment. The most recent research predicts:

  • the number of people with vision impairment will double to 800,000 by 2020
  • the number of people with hearing impairment is expected to increase from 3.5 million today to over 5 million in 2020.

Those of us who do not have a disability today have a strong likelihood of developing hearing or vision impairment in our senior years.
