The awards, run by the .au Domain Administration (auDA) and InternetNZ, are designed to recognise the achievement of organisations which use the internet to benefit the community in innovative ways.
Work Ventures won the Internet Access and Digital Skills award for its program to help reduce the digital divide, which includes provision of free access to the Internet at technology hubs, refurbished computers for disadvantaged people, and training. The program particularly targets indigenous youth in remote areas, refugees and seniors.
Media Access Australia was a finalist in this division for our Service Providers Accessibility Guide, a simple, practical guide for DisabilityCare Australia providers to help them deliver accessible communications. The Guide also gives basic information for carers and disability workers on how to adapt computers for people with disabilities, and gives organisations information on how to adapt digital technology for employees with disability.
Fellow not-for-profit Infoxchange helped raise the profile of web accessibility by being highly commended for the Innovation Award. This was in recognition of TestIT, Infoxchange’s website testing team which uses the unique talents of people with Asperger’s Syndrome. The level of memory recall and attention to detail of these employees has helped give the firm a competitive advantage, while helping these employees experiences significant emotional, financial and social benefits.
