A patent registered by Apple earlier this month will make Apple TV more accessible by incorporating an audible menu. This will allow blind or vision impaired users to access content and media by following audio prompts instead of using a remote control.

Apple TV is a digital media receiver where different forms of media such as video, music and pictures can be stored. Content on Apple TV can be synched with a user’s account on iTunes, Netflix, YouTube and more. Users can view the content through an output device such as a HDTV or Apple computer.

According to an Apple Patent blog, Patently Apple, a screen reader will identify “navigable and non-navigable information". Users are able to be guided through the menu by a voice that converts graphic and text information into speech, similar to the way a screen reader converts text information on the web into synthetic speech.

The new patent will also allow users to use a virtual keyboard with a remote by voicing the corresponding letter that the remote is directed at. As the features are in the early stages of development, it is not yet known when they will reach the market.
