New Media

New media refers to the emergence, or convergence, of media that utilises digital information and communication technologies, such as the Internet. New Media can include the digital delivery of traditional media, such as downloading television programs or movies. It also includes digital-dependent media such as websites, computer (video) games and software applications.

New media is rapidly evolving and often access is playing 'catch up' as new products and services emerge. However, much is still accessible and has the potential to be accessible with a few simple steps. This area of the website provides a comprehensive guide to everything you need to know about new media, as a consumer or creator.

This area is divided into six sections:

User guides

Includes practical tips and step-by-step instructions on the access features of Computers and Operating Systems (including buying accessible computers, turning on accessibility features in Microsoft Windows, Mac OS and Linux), web browsers, assistive technology software, MP3 and portable media players, mobile phones, and social media.

Finding accessible content

Includes Streaming Video, Podcasts and Vodcasts, video games and closed captioned movies on itunes.

Creating accessible content

Includes VODcasts and video, website development and application and cloud development.

Research and publications

Includes the Social Media Accessibility Review and Accessible Broadband for all Australians.
