    Netflix captioning suit delayed

    In June 2011, the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) sued online video service Netflix for failing to provide captions on the majority of titles on its ‘Watch Instantly’ video-on-demand service. A court has now ordered a stay in the motion, pending an investigation into captioning of Internet media by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

  • Access to new release DVD titles during November 2011 stands at 24% for audio description and 62% for captioning. A total of 82 titles were researched in this month by Media Access Australia.

  • Access to new release DVD titles during the month of September 2011 stands at 30% for audio description and 64% for captioning. A total of 87 titles were researched in this month by Media Access Australia.

  • Caption quality is a contentious issue frequently raised by Australians who are Deaf or hearing impaired. Despite a number of pressures on the industry, many professional captioners continue to approach their work with dedication and passion.
