CSU cautions use of Google apps due to accessibility issues

A report by the Accessible Technology Initiative at California State University has cautioned US universities on campus-wide adoption of Google’s Apps for Education based on the accessibility issues found in these products.

The ATI Google Apps Accessibility Evaluation Project tested the accessibility of Gmail Chat, Google Calendar, Google Sites and Google Docs using automated, manual and user testing with screen readers.

The report showed a number of accessibility issues are present in the Google Apps suite, and based on these results made the following recommendations:

New large print contacts app for the iPad now available

Ai Squared has released a new ‘large print’ contacts app for the iPad for users who have difficulty with the text size on the screen.

ZoomContacts uses Apple’s internal contacts database to store and manage contacts. This means that any existing contacts will be available using ZoomContacts, and you also manage and search your contacts using the custom interface that comes with this app.

Dr Hollier presents at Council on the Ageing WA Conference

Media Access Australia WA Manager Dr Scott Hollier will be presenting today on access to online media and digital technology at the Council on the Ageing WA Active Ageing Conference.

Dr Hollier’s presentation, ‘Getting online – accessibility tools for seniors with disabilities’, will look at the accessibility features of computers and mobile devices, including Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Google Android devices and future trends.

Access to media empowers people of all ages to be independent, gain knowledge, make their own choices and be active members of our society.

UK travel company websites fall short on basic accessibility

An investigation into the accessibility of the top ten UK travel company websites has shown that none of these websites met the most basic level of accessibility, with Ryanair providing the poorest accessibility to customers.

Nomensa, a digital agency specialising in online user experience, web accessibility and web design, assessed two pages, the homepage and the customer support or help page from each website against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0.
